proper screen gap for DS?

Post by djjer321 » Sat Apr 17, 2021 1:05 am

I am trying to properly capture footage from DS games on a modded 3DS from loopy.

I have seen a number of different claims as to what the number of pixels there are (screen gap) between the two DS screens. I have seen people say 64, 80, 90, 96.

I start the DS game while holding start on the 3DS to get the proper resolution.
I use the DS 1:1 setting in the 3DS capture software and then do the actual capture in xsplit from the two split screens.

One DS screen is 256x192 so if I used 96 pixels for the gap, the full resolution would be 256x(192*2+96) = 256x480. This seems the most plausible but I just want to be sure. I am then upscaling the footage to 1024x1920 and capturing using xsplit with 1024x1920.

Well when I look at these things on desume and use the "small gap" of 64 vs the "large gap" of 90 it looks better
So I guess I should use 256x(192*2+64) = 256x448 and up sized 4x is 1024x1792 or rescale by 4.21875 to get 1080x1890
or rescale by 4.28571428571 to get 1097x1920. Look off to anyone?

If I can remember the last time I worried about this, I think my conclusion was: it varies by game.

If you have Contra 4, you can try firing your Spreader diagonally so that your shots span the top screen, take some screen caps, load those images in your favorite image manipulation program, position those images until they look good to you, and then measure the gap yourself.

Yeah I think you are correct, it does vary by game.
64 pixels seems to work for Zelda Spirit Tracks and 96 pixels seems to work for Sonic Rush....
