Settings for Audio Recording on the Mac

Hello, so I've been testing my new capture board with the Mac software. It's working fine, it's recording in good quality. The problem is the audio, do I have to change my Sound prefrences to record the audio? I'm using a 3MM audio cable, it just doesn't seem to record though? Any thoughts or answers would be much appreciated
