I have the original version 3DS XL (not new) and wanted to get a capture card for it, but the only option I see available for purchase is for the NEW 3DS XL.. Does that mean I can't send in my old 3DS XL for the mod?

Not to Loopy. For the old 3DS XL, there's only optimize.ath.cx capture boards. Plenty of modders and resellers on eBay, and some operate outside of that (delfinocustoms, rubyotaku).
However, some of them don't take care to make it look nice, so don't send in your special edition if you care about it. Also expect to wait a while.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Elysium~ It looks like optimize.ath.cx are located in Japan so it might be even easier for me on shipping.
