Sleep mode turning off and on when closing.

A few years ago (2020/2021) I got sent my OG DS in to be upgraded with the capture card.
Today, I was playing New Super Mario Bros with it, and closed the DS to look at something else.
When I did that, I heard the classic "Bye Bye" from Mario, but I also heard "It's me, Mario" as if I had opened the console back up, even though I didn't. It then kept cycling through "Bye Bye" and "It's me, Mario" until I opened it back up.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything I can do.
I know it's not major, but I'm just worried about battery life (I do use the DS for things other than capturing footage).
