N3DS status / feedback

Post by loopy » Sun Dec 04, 2022 1:06 am

I'll start a separate thread for feedback, software updates, etc. now that some units have started to ship.

Software: https://3dscapture.com/tmp/3ds_capture_20230102.zip

Driver: https://www.ftdichip.com/old2020/Driver ... er.exe.zip

If you get errors about missing DLLs, install this: https://download.microsoft.com/download ... st_x86.exe

And this is based on the old 3DS app, if audio isn't working get the DirectX installer: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... g=en&id=35
(Lame, I know. I'll get around to changing that once the important stuff is working.

Known issues:
  • Minor instability issues (output stutters when waking from sleep / changing video modes)
  • Audio is missing in homebrew NES/SNES emulators.
  • On my test laptop, capturing was unstable until I ran the DirectX installer. No idea why. It had problems with DS too, so maybe it's just this computer? I hope so, anyway.

Nothing too concerning there, I just need time to work on it. There's still a bunch of consoles here to ship out before I can start fixing things, that'll probably take another week. For now I'm mainly interested to know whether you can get a stable picture out of it.

Hello,

Just got everything installed and the basics seem to work fine, so that's good! The system I got was factory reset before I shipped it out, so I did a quick video setting it up and demoing some games:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwvM0S9-KbA
Top screen takes up most of the viewing window, touch screen appears in the upper right. Video was recorded at the 3DS' native refresh rate and in 1080p, likely will take a couple more minutes to process completely.
(EDIT: Privated the video because I realized I forgot to take something crucial out of the setup process lmao)

The audio seems to be missing some frequencies and not upsampling correctly (not really sure)? Certain sounds (like the home button tone in DS software and keyboard noises) seem to not play, and the audio seems to stutter and pop a bit, but it's really really close overall. It's a nice thing to have audio capture either way.

I also saw some issues playing DS software (whole screen gets offset?), but like you said, likely resolvable by replugging the cable. I also did have to remove the cable to close the program.

Let me know if you need me to test anything super weird/specific and I can get on that as well.

Just finished livestreaming the initial tests.

Had issues with the screens inverting on DS games and some 3DS games (mainly Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions and all DS games). Some games gave issues with vertical scan line issues, primarily Pokémon games, but ones installed on the 3DS mainly seemed to work fine and games like Majora's Mask 3D, Luigi's Mansion 3D, Metroid Samus Returns, and Project X Zone 2 worked fine. I'll test out more stuff later one, but one other issue I noticed was the debug menu did not want to close when I shut down the program and I had to task manager close the debug menu to fully shut it down.

For features, the DS 1:1 and DS Upscaled did not work for me when I tried turning them on for DS games.

I captured my whole Desktop screen when doing the livestream on Twitch so I'll upload it to my YouTube channel and timestamp the issues on YouTube. Overall it was still pretty smooth bugs included, and didn't have any frame drops, save for actual games that suffer with frame drops normally, which was great.
If I'm posting, it must mean I'm either a) procrastinating on schoolwork, or b) procrastinating on recording.

Had to private my video from earlier because I realized I forgot to cut something, oops lol.

I did some more testing after that last night, and discovered that unplugging/replugging the cable whilst the screen is all messed up makes no difference. The issue also appears on regular 3DS games (as discovered by Roxas), including the Internet Browser?:

Extremely strange stuff, but again, most of the basic functionality is here and works as expected!

Hi again! Also decided to install custom firmware on my capture 3DS, so I recorded the process:

The bug of the screens not appearing correctly returns as expected, but there's something a little new here as well:

(click the image to see it in action)

Looks to be some kind of frequency mismatch? Not entirely certain, I won't pretend to be an expert.

Decided to play through Cave Story 3D to record footage for archival purposes (using 3.5mm audio cable into the headphone jack), and ran into weird issues with the screen I hadn't seen before (timestamped):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uulv-vdrkb8&t=1h47m25s

It lasts through pretty much the entire last cave section and I didn't notice it anywhere else for whatever reason.

EDIT: Also captured an episode of Nintendo Show 3D from the eShop. Hoping to be able to archive them all in 3D, but that's a goal for later :P

Hi Loopy, I am also part of your N3DSXL test group. I have nothing further to add, same bugs as everybody else, so I'll simply echo what everybody else is saying. Amazing job on the cut to the shell. Looking forward to being able to play some 2D games eventually. Thanks!

Haven’t delved too deep into testing a multitude of things but so far, the software doesn’t seem to like Homebrew apps very much. FBI, hShop, Anemone and a few others - getting those vertical lines moving across the screen.

Also experiencing an occasional flicker while playing Fire Emblem Fates. Nothing that ruins the gaming experiencing though.

Update 12/6: The viewer software spazzes out and scrambles erratically in different colors specifically when exiting the System Settings. Tried it twice and same result. As Loopy stated, this was fixed by unplugging and replugging the USB-C cable from the 3DS.
