Multiple DS' at the same time

Post by ricky » Thu Jan 12, 2023 11:33 pm

Hey! I've just ordered my second DS install and i'm very excited. I was just wondering what the most optimal way of running multiple systems is? Like would I get some kind of USB hub perhaps? And what about audio since I only have a single line-in port? (Mic port is super fuzzy sounding so I don't really want to use that.)

I also think I'll probably order a 3rd and 4th in the future, so I want my setup to be expandable / future proof.

Would like some advice so I know what I need to purchase. Ty in advance. :D

Although it probably would work, I personally wouldn’t go this route. I feel like you would run into data transfer issues going from system>hub>pc. If you try this though, please post your results because I am using close to all of my usb ports on my pc (and there are 11 of them lol) and this could be an interesting option.

I've had 8 running together on my desktop pc, no hub.
For audio, you'd need a mixer of some sort. Something like this? https://www.amazon.com/TENEALAY-Stereo- ... B09WDLS2SK

For audio, I got a Maker Hart Loop mixer not too long ago, though on eBay for half-price. Uses its own power brick which I'm sure means it's better, somehow.

Great, fun devices! Useful for when you play games with headphones, but you also don't want to lose track of any incoming, time-sensitive work emails. Or the reverse: working at a computer while being in some online lobby while you wait for anyone to show up (e.g. Tetris Effect Connected). How about your own custom soundtrack for any game that allows you to set its music volume to zero? Both audio sources outputting to the same speaker/headphones makes all the difference!

The only reason I mention a hub is because I'm kinda running out of available USB ports. Would using a hub be a bad idea? Another user mentioned a data transfer issue which seems plausible, but I'm not sure if there are different kinds of hubs that can help with that perhaps? I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff. If not I guess I'll just have to free up some ports on my pc.

Tysm for the help & for the link to the mixer, will definitely purchase!

What did you end up doing? I ordered 6 boards cause I plan on having 6 DS at the same time... but I am also running out of slots on my PC. Did the hub solution work?

Chiming in here, I THINK you will be fine if you get a powered USB3.0 hub (powered externally from the wall) and plug it into a USB3.0 port. I'm pretty sure the DS capture card uses USB2 protocol. Max theoretical bandwidth of USB2 is 480mbps which I doubt the capture card would ever come close to using up. Max theoretical bandwidth of USB3 is 4800mbps, meaning it would take 10 USB2 devices on a USB3 port to completely use up the available bandwidth. THEORETICALLY! Usually USB devices don't even come close to reaching the theoretical speeds the protocol can handle.

With that said, what I don't know for sure is if the USB hub will still communicate with the computer at USB3 speeds if it detects there's only USB2 devices plugged into it. I don't see why it wouldn't, but if it doesn't you could have a problem using multiple capture cards simultaneously.

I use 1 DS fat with a Powered USB Hub and it works fine, however it did not work for my 3DS, had to plug that in directly to the PC.
