Poor Video Quality?

The video itself displays perfectly on my computer, but when I go to capture, I end up with some really horrendous quality. The screen has major artifacts and jumps around. I'm using the default, recommended codec at the default settings. Different codes don't yield any better results (and instead result in dropped frames).

I've tried after a restart and disables most other running programs. My computer should be able to handle it I think (i7 2.67ghz, 12GB Ram). Any ideas what's going on?

I had the exact same problem as you did. Use Xvid MPEG-4 Codec. That fixed the problem for me.

Because it's Xvid. Any lossy codec is going to have some artifacts. Try playing around with its quality settings.

Duh, I totally forgot Xvid was lossy. I ended up going Lagarith and then converting the .AVI with Virtual dub to an .AVI format that MPEG Streamclip could then convert into h264 so I could edit it on my Mac. So far the quality seems ok.

Also, for some reason, on the 3DS itself, the upper screen just blew up in size. I'm using the XVid MPEG-4 codec right now.

What software are you using? And what do you mean by "blew up in size"?

I'm using fraps and (as mentioned) the XVid MPEG-4 codec; the upper screen will sometimes just zoom into the upper-left corner or so, and that's all I can see on that screen (but I can still see everything on the top screen of the capture software).

When the screen blows up like that, the video quality becomes a lot poorer. Otherwise, it's fine; I dunno why the screen and video quality suddenly go haywire like that, though. It's happened multiple times by now, about a few minutes after turning the capture 3DS on.
