DS Lite capture cards would be good too because most people own DS Lites then DS phats. DS Lites also have brightness settings and other things the DS Phat does not have.
While nice for folks with different models, it's probably not as high of a priority due to the fact that brightness settings and such won't impact the video output. Thankfully DS phats are relatively inexpensive and still available second-hand, and when capture cards for the 3DS models are available again, it'll be a bit of a moot point for DS games. For GBA games, I usually could play off of the monitor instead of the console itself and some folks use the GameCube's GB Player.

I’d be down to purchase one. I currently have a software mod in my new 3ds xl called NTR CFW, which allows you to wirelessly stream the footage to your computer, it’s not as smooth and crashes a lot, which is why I want a 3ds capture card, but my parents always said no every time I asked for one. I do have an original 3ds just sitting around the shelves

Are you planning to separate the usb port from the board to make repairability due to "wear and tear / user abuse" easier for you or the user to self repair? I believe Kat also did this to address the IR port on the XL/LL due to the board placement.

Referenced install guide for the XL/LL version: http://video-capture.wikidot.com/niseto ... ling-3dsll
Most likely.
Not for repairability, board placement gets really tricky without doing it that way.

What's the possibility of a controller mod for the new 3ds? None? Low?

None. Sorry.
I regret ever making it, TBH. It took a lot of time and they don't sell. It's too difficult for the average person to install, and N3DS would be even harder to work with.

Can you give more info on the way the you got the left analog stick to work? Is it just a sinking or sourcing of the current? And can you give info on the tp255 ir? I tried connecting it to an arduino to read what it was doing, but could never figure out how to read it correctly.
