Is a flucuating FPS normal?

Post by ENunn » Fri Nov 08, 2019 4:40 am

I got my DS modded with the capture board today and I'm in love with it so far! However, it looks like the framerate is sort of fluctuating between 57fps and 59.whateverbelow70 fps during capture. Seems like its a duplicate frame nightmare

Is this normal?

Well here is the thing, the output is direct to the PC through the software, but you are forgetting that the codec you use plays a huge role in video quality and performance. I recommend looking into what a codec is and seeing if you can find any that matches the quality you want. Technically speaking nothing is accurately in perfect frames, 60FPS is just the round up of what it actually is.

That is true. My old crappy laptop with the x264vfw codec has been performing better (almost a solid 59.7fps which I think is the DS refresh). I tried UtVideo and x264vfw on my main desktop (i7-8700k + RTX 2060 + 16GB of RAM) and its all over the place.

It could just be that the hardware might just be too overkill for the codec. It's also possible that the codec wasn't optimized for the hardware either, even though the hardware is newer and more powerful, it lacks to the coding to utilize it properly. It's pretty common to happen especially with drivers.

Late but I'm not sure how thats possible. I've recorded multiple vids on both my laptop and desktop with those two codecs and they worked perfectly fine in both Amarec and Virtualdub.

But now I'm facing another issue on my laptop where the framerate slowly dips and dips and dips.

Did an "experiment" if you will, when I was recording it was a solid 59.7 fps. I went out for about two hours and when I got back home the framerate dipped down to like 45 fps. I don't know what's causing that. I've tried multiple codecs. Rebooted, unplugged, plugged back in, restarted the software, I don't know what to do.

A month later I'm still having issues. Tried plenty of codecs (MagicYUV, x264vfw, Lagarith, UtVideo, etc.) and now I can't even record at 59.7fps. So frustrating lol

Any ideas?

Did you try using a better usb cable and a usb port directly connected on the motherboard? A totally different computer? Disable services you might be running? Try using a simplier coding?

What CPU do you have?

Tried all my USB ports, same issue. I don't think I have other micro USB cables that work, but I'll probably try that sometime.

Only computers I have are my Windows 10 desktop and laptop. Desktop performs worse than my laptop despite it being a better PC. Don't know what services can cause errors.

Sorry I meant encoder. But your CPU is more than enough to handle the encoding for such a small resolution.

I know using different usb cables have caused a large variation in charging time so I am guessing it could do the same thing for data transfer speed.

Service to consider disabling might firewall, anti virus, real time encryption (might not be plausible to disable). Stuff that might hog up CPU cycles. Open up the task manager and see if your computer is not idle when you're not doing anything.

Try updating all of the drivers? Look to see if there are newer drivers not just listed in windows update, but video/usb drivers from the manufacturer of the hw. Possibly downgrading the driver as well.

Just to eliminate your gaming console ask to borrow someone with a mac so you would be not using a) your hw and b) windows and see if the problem still exists. I think there is a mac version of the sw someone made?

Can you see it skipping in the display window or just the .avi output? Is it only recording that you're having issues with? Can you see it dropping frames when recording is stopped?
